free finished single camera essay
Single Camera techniques, is what is says on the tin, where the film or a piece of footage is shot using just the single camera, one sound recorder, one lighting rig and one set. Single camera is filmed shot by shot with only one shot at a time which includes many different types of camera angle and camera styles for example mid shot, pan and close up. Shooting separately gives the director the ability to improve the shots because of all the concentration being directed towards that shot with spontaneous improvements being made furthermore it will improve the professionalism of the film at the end of editing.
On benefit of single camera technique is that it’s more flexible for directors. They can capture shots individually and prepare the composition, lighting and mise-en-scene with the up-most precision. Single camera set ups are also cheaper, since you only need to use one camera,
One set of lighting equipment and one set of technical crew to assist the production. This gives the chance for the production team to have more to spend on other luxuries like; bigger celebrities etc. Also with these, it is easier to manage any repairs and maintenance, as the small amount of equipment means management is easy to keep track of.
Single camera set ups are commonly used in film for most genres of films, whereas in TV it tends to be used less - TV studios allow multi-camera set ups to be handled more easily. This is due to the amount of action generally happening in these and would be easier to capture these moments through multi-camera. But many would argue that with single camera this is still feasible. As single camera means that you can get all prospective and also it gives the chance for flexibility. Single Camera Techniques are currently used in such TV programs like “Come Dine with Me” and “Homes Under the Hammer”
But there are also many disadvantages to using a single camera set up. Equipment has to be taken down and re-set for every shot, which is very time consuming and when you have to hit deadlines time is against you, this could possibly lead to mistakes and potential health and safety risks which means that a lot of pre-production will have had to be completed.
It is also, only possible for one image to be filmed at any given time and so reaction shots and background images have to be filmed separately and intercut with also some dialogue scenes having to be shot many times, so the director can edit them together into a continuous sequence. This means that a highly skilled person will have to come and complete these jobs which is very expensive and could have effect on what is possible in the filming.
Finally, single camera set ups can cause problems with continuity, since every shot is filmed separately. It is a lot easier for differences to slip through unnoticed between the different takes, and so single camera work can lead to more continuity errors. This would lead to a lot of time wasting due to preparation time but also if errors are let through the whole re-filming of that sequence or scene has to be completed.
There are other methods that can be used instead of single camera techniques. One of these is a multi-camera technique. This is where more than one camera used, more than one lighting rig, sound boom and several sets. Multi-camera can be shot in any order due to the speed that shots can be filmed.
A benefit of multi-camera is that it is very fast to complete filming due to the amount of cameras that can catch the shot needed whilst others are filming as well. This also has the benefit of when it comes to review of the shots; it leaves a lot of time for them to re-shoot, so the filming is perfect. Another benefit is that it gives the audience the chance to see several angles of the same scene where as with single camera techniques shots have to be stopped and re-run so continuity errors are highly occurant.
On the other hand, multi-camera set-up has its down falls. One of these is that it will become confusing during the editing process due to the amount of shots that are completed which would have the impact of making the production process a lot longer than it would be with a coherent single camera set-up. Another dis-advantage is that it is harder for some shots to be completed with other camera around sue to the appearance of them whilst shooting.
Looking at these methods of filming, both of these methods are beneficial to different types of filming due to the different intensities and different demands of the filming. Single camera is better suited to a program like “Come Dine with Me” and the property programs like “Homes under the Hammer”. With multi-camera method it suits programs with a higher intensity and demand for deadlines like the soap operas, “Emmerdale” “Coronation Street”
Referring to my appendix, these screen shots are very typical of a single camera film. This is due to the variety and use of the types of camera angle etc. For example there are 3 establishing shot used through the first 2 minutes which is used to inform the reader about date, time, weather, location and much more information for the audience to learn from. With the massive variety of shot type it makes the footage a lot more interesting as if these were not included then the footage would be very boring and static.
Also with the use of camera types like over the shoulder, bird’s eye view, pan and also the use of rule of thirds. These all contribute towards making the film more interesting. With all the variations of shot types it makes the single camera more interesting but also with only one camera it is easier due to some angles being unable to feature from this. The inclusion of rule of thirds made the shots more interesting as the depth of the shots means that these shots are inclusive of more background images and more depth to help contribute towards the establishing shots once used already.

Progress
I have finished my film proposals and are continuing to improve these when i can.
I have now started to to my film project by lookin gat Young Adult directed by Justin Reitman, i will be looking at screenshots of the film and analysing them, furthermore i will be looking at pro's and con's of the single camera techniques.
I will be hoping to start my pre-production in full next week and will be hoping to complete that by minimum of November and latest of December.

Scans for First planning and also Feasibility.
Within this post I have a lot of my pre-production that I have started, this includes a basic spider diagram of different genres that I have decided would be feasible but also to see which is the most effective to write about afterwards. Another part of my preproduction was the decision of the best genre to do. This meant that I was able to only write up ideas for the chosen genres which saved me time to do other items of my pre-production.
The next item of my preproduction was the basic story board of my first ideas of my film which was the genre of Action. This also gave me the chance to practise the process of a storyboard but also it gave me ideas of which idea would be the best to do. The next part of my pre-production is the basic ideas of this Action genre which is just an outlining of what would happen throughout the story but to also make sure that it was coherent for the story to be at a professional quality. The last part of this section of Pre-production is my film proposal. This is used to outline my ideas and what I hope to achieve from this project. It outlines genre, ideas and the title of the project. This will help me to plan all of the future processes of the story but also make sure I do not come off topic of the idea that I have produced.
This is my in depth Spider Diagram which summarieses all of my original ideas. |
This is the items i used to make sure i choose a feisable genre. |

My First Entry
Welcome to my project of single techniques!
My media blog starts today; our project is to make a 2-5 minute film extract using only a single camera to film. i started researching single camera techniques by looking at previous students work and also researching professional pieces released for the public to see. I will use this inspiration to make my footage unique, interesting and also captivating.
What Does Single Camera Techniques Mean?
A single Camera Techniques is as the name sounds, it is a film production where only one camera is used and is edited to make the footage more interesting, they are normally shot coherently with several shots considered. A major benefit that Single Camera gives to the director is that they have more control over the shots chosen and also makes the footage simple and easier to shoot due to not having to manage more than one camera. On the other hand, using Single Camera means that a multi-camera shot would give more prospective and also more flexibility with the shots chosen. Also the allowance of errors with some shots with more footage means that the director and editing team have more chance of errors.
I have been planning my Single Camera techniques for a while now with many plans and ideas being written up and I will be having a discussion about these ideas and negotiating them with me teacher (MR Stephens) to make sure all my plans are viable and are in the best interest of my grades.
